millenials
This afternoon I sat on a panel of 5 “millenials” in front of a large group of HBO executives at the Time Warner Center. Millenials are classified as anyone born between 1980-2000. We are typically tech-savvy, early-adopting multi-taskers. The panel was part of a 3 day Leadership Conference for HBO Vice Presidents, and was a chance for them to pick our brains in an attempt to get a better idea of how HBO can market and deliver media content to our generation. I was a bit nervous before hand because the other members of the panel had all done this before. But, it ended up being so much fun! It was all fairly casual, and the moderator did a great job of letting us all speak.
They asked questions like: how do you typically consume media? do you ever watch television in real time? what technologies do you own? what is your online presence (I enjoyed that one)? how can we engage your age group in the workplace, in a way that really speaks to you? Things like that.
Basically, without trying to make it an “us/them” situation, they needed to truly grasp the fact that we want TV, but we don’t just want to watch it on our television. For us to get behind a show, we need to be able to interact with it on many levels across various platforms, so we feel a part of it. As far as the workplace goes, we have to know that our time spent in the office, any office, is worth it. Why should I be HERE instead of somewhere else? I think it was hard for them to see that I am fully capable of being productive writing an email, while on the phone and refreshing my tumblr. I explained that for me, personally, to reach my potential, but mind needs to be engaged on many levels, and that means consuming media in multiple forms at once. The fact is that I get bored easily, so if I can have 3 things going at the same time, I feel much more energetic than if I’m handling one thing at a time. That’s old school, yo! I could go on and on, but it really was very interesting and I think everyone got a lot out of it, including me."

maybe so maybe not
now, after i post about how debilitated, i mean liberated i was without my computer for a night, i start reading about the "cool kids" over at tumblr.com.
those kids over there are MEGA MEGA MEGA attached to their computers. outrageous.
that site makes me feel so out of date. those kids over there are being really witty and cute and fun, it seems.
i feel like i am over here at this dinosaur site...it was comforting to see that some of the tumblrs still have a regular blog...
but honest, between flickr and vimeo and xm and tumblr and holy fuck, what else? i'm sure i'm forgetting something...
well, i really do like that layout.
is it stupid to fight with my computer? these kids have made it seem fun to be single solo computing all the time. i mean, i always like it, too, but i'm not as creative as i could be.
but is it better to live on the OUTSIDE of the computer, talking and hanging out in real time with people, or creating our cyber personalities so acutely that we are safe in the confines of letting the screen filter out the actual vibrations of humans.
i'm super curious about all this. is it a cop-out or just evolution of life, to be more into developing your cyber sitch than the real life sitch. i dunno. super curious though. i must be on the fence somehow, choosing to process this here instead of talking on the phone or meeting a friend for breakfast.

Out of Touch
so, a couple days ago, i left the power cord to my computer at a friends house out of town (insert warm hummus>risotto>roasted vegetables!) when i realized the power cord sitch, i seriously went into panic mode. why? because i did not realize how completely dominated my life is by my computer. WOW! like, majorly dominated.
i laugh at the irony, as i type this all on said computer, letting you all know about my realization.
last night, i did not have access to my 'puter. AND I CAN'T TELL YOU HOW LIBERATING IT WAS!!! or yes, i can tell you. i just did. no, i didn't. but i am about to: IT WAS SO LIBERATING!!!
you see, i don't have a TV, but i watch some stuff on internet TV. its only really been in the last 6 months or so that i have found free internet TV sites. pretty crazy.
anyways, i found myself sorting thru useless piles of paper that collect, even reading a book that i like to reference, even did some yoga!!! WOW!
and honest, being single solo, living alone, what i discovered is that i am constantly fucking around with my computer. CONSTANTLY. now, i try to imagine if something like the iPhone would be good for someone like me, cuz then i wouldn't necessarily have to lug my whole computer around. truth is, i'm not wild about the idea of jumping into ATT's reality, so i'll just hold out for verizon before entering my own personal iPhone drama.
okay. now, maybe all of this does or doesn't have anything to do with hall and oates. my very first concert EVER was hall and oates at blossom music center in cuyahoga falls, ohio (the H20 tour). we sat on the lawn and brought KFC, sat on a blanket...that's all i remember. i always love that venue, nestled in the trees...i also saw ShaNaNa there. what? remember bowser? saw some others there, as well. had to throw the ShaNaNa into my Brag, i mean, Blog.
so, i was in the grocery store tonight, and they were playing hall and oats. and i was singing along, and this song got stuck in my head: "you're out of touch, i'm out of time". so being the good girl dominated by my computer of which i now have the power cord to, i googled it. found that youtube vid, and decided to use it to tell my 2008 tale of mass computer consumption by me, of which i took the night off of last night. tonight, as you can see, not so much a night off. making up for lost time, surely.
anyways, i was kinda crackin up at the vid, so enjoy and this is my public service announcement: step away from your computer screen!!!!! and i'll surely do the same. gonna institute a one night at home without computer night a week. bye!

elliott smith by autumn de wilde

last night, i went to a gallery exhibit for the noisepop fest that happens here in SF. autumn de wilde was presenting her collection of elliott smith pixx in the mission. it was a cool exhibit, i bought the book, and scampered out of there.
poking around on the web, finding more stuff by autumn that i really really like. she has a bunch of images that you'll recognize, too. i like this pic, cuz it reminds me of a ryan adams song that i love. cool pic
built to spill, fillmore
i saw built to spill earlier in the week, at the fillmore (in SF). it was a really good show! i remember listening to them ten years earlier, then just kinda stopped, and never bothered to listen again. but the show was really really great, and what made it better was a new friend was traveling from honduras, and she and I had a blast.

its not like i believe in...
...everlasting love. i DO believe in my newest favorite artist: Laura Marling, from album Alas I Cannot Swim. i am sure she is so tired of this being pointed out, but i can't help it: SHE IS ONLY SEVENTEEN!!! i loved her music before knowing this, and love it more BECAUSE of it.
major props out to andy for flicking the switch for me on this sweet sweet artist*

surrender to the flow
oh gosh. it's been far too long since i've posted here...blah blah blah...
briefly, a super quick plug for a website that someone just dropped into my orbit from facebook, which i only recently joined, like less than one week ago.
alas, a dear old phriend messaged me with this website:
www.phishows.com
i messaged him back and said something stupid to the effect of, "oh. i don't listen to phish much anymore..."
that site is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i highly highly recommend it.
my first choice was 12.29.03

those 4 shows in miami were pretty incred. for whatever reason, i have not done the due diligence to get that 12.29.03 show on disc. or, i had it and lost it or some other way of just blowing off "owning" it. so its cool for me to find this site, and just plug right into what show i wanna hear. rad.
i took these pix the second night of hampton 1.03.03
so yeah, i surrendered to the flow and went to the www.phishows.com and will now probably be on a phish rampage, digging deep in the Fall '94, etc...
